Neuromuscular Therapy & Orthopedic Massage

Neuromuscular therapy is a manual therapy for pain management, rehabilitation & prevention. It integrates diverse techniques such as Trigger Point Therapy, Neuromuscular Release, Positional Release, deep transverse friction, Myofascial approaches, and muscle energy. It is treatment for soft-tissue dysfunction and myofascial trigger points, which are small contractions in muscle fibers that cause pain, weakness and discomfort in a referred area.

Neuromuscular therapists are highly skilled in muscle anatomy, connective tissue work, orthopedic assessment in massage therapy and manual therapy.

The goal of neuromuscular therapy is to reduce pain, discomfort and stress in the body by using precise manual techniques that maintain relaxed and lengthened muscles. In the right hands, neuromuscular therapy is a highly effective treatment for chronic pain, muscular trauma resulting from an accident or injury, or strain caused by overuse.

Sports Massage & Stretch Therapy

Sports Massage was developed to help with muscle systems used for a particular sport with a variety of approaches to help athletes in training -- before, during, or after sports events. Classic Swedish and Myofascial & Neuromuscular release are predominantly techniques to relax soft-tissue and stretch the fascia; a hollow fibrous network of connective tissue made of elastin and collagen that surrounds the organs, bones, muscles and tendons within the body. Poor posture and physical trauma can cause the fascia to become hard and lose elasticity, resulting in a decrease in flexibility. Manipulating and stretching it during a sports massage will relax the fascia and tissue it surrounds to regain the flexibility and motion. Or, it may help muscle strains, Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), aiding healing after a sports injury.

I had been an experienced Thai bodyworker for several years when I decided to learn Neuromuscular Therapy and Orthopedic Massage at National Holistic Institute graduating with honors and completing 1250 hours training in the art of Eastern Bodywork and Western Anatomy. As a Clinical Massage Therapist I specialize in Trigger Points and Myofascial Pain, Sports Massage, Orthopedic-Therapeutic Massage, Thai Massage and Therapeutic Stretching. My aim is to listen to you and your body so I can help facilitate your own healing and rejuvenation.

Trigger Point Definition

Drs. Janet Travell & David Simons (1998) described a trigger point as, "A highly irritable localized spot of exquisite tenderness in a nodule in a palpable taut band of (skeletal) muscle.

Myofascial Trigger Point - What Is It?

Myofascial Made Simple The word myofascial means muscle tissue (myo) and the connective tissue in and around it (fascia). Myofascial pain often results from muscle injury or repetitive strain. When stressed or injured, muscles often form trigger points, like contracted knots, that cause pain and tightness.


Pain Sciences and Myofascial Pain

Myofascial pain can mimic other pain diagnoses such as neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, systemic diseases, tinnitus, and certain metabolic, parasitic, and nutritional disorder, among others. Although deifications of TrPs are used different disciplines, the most commonly accepted definition maintain that "a TrP is a hyper irritable spot in the taut band of a skeletal muscle that is painful on compression , stretch, overload or contraction of the tissue which usually responds with the a referred pain that is perceived distant from the spot. Although Travell and Simon distinguished different types of TrPs, including active, latent, satellite, and primary and secondary TrPs, in the current thinking , only active and latent TrPs are considered in research and clinical practice.

History of Trigger Points

The study of muscular pain can be traced to the 15th century. Many terms have been proposed to describe muscle related pain. The most currently acceptable terms are myofascial pain and myofascial trigger points. Dr. Janet Travell, MD (1901-1997), an American medical doctor and the personal rheumatologist of US president John F. Kennedy, was the first to propose the term myofascial trigger point " in 1942. In 1960 Dr. Travell teamed up with Dr. David G. Simons, MD (1922-2010) to further explore the realm of trigger points and myofascial pain syndrome. In 1983, Simons and Travell published their work entitled "Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction - The Trigger Point Manual". This book was a breakthrough in the world of rheumatology, orthopedics and physiotherapy. It changed the understanding and treatment approach towards chronic pain. Since 1983, thousands of physiotherapists, doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists and other health professionals worldwide have applied trigger point therapy in their practice.
